The public broadcaster took action against Mvoko and seven other journalists after they spoke out against an editorial decision to not show footage of violent protests and dictatorial management styles.

Mvoko penned a front page article detailing his experiences at the SABC.

He was particularly scathing about the management style of Jimi Matthews, who resigned as SABC CEO weeks ago.

The SABC has since re-instated the seven permanent employees, but have not done so with Mvoko.

The public broadcaster has stopped scheduling Mvoko, who is an independent contractor, for any work.

Mvoko told JacarandaFM news that the entire ordeal has taken a huge toll on him.

He says it is difficult to accept the fact that he is not part of election coverage this year.

"It has to hurt you know. You feel like something has been taken away from you. It is painful." says Mvoko.
