Three men are expected to appear in the Graskop Magistrate's
Court on Monday for suspected illegal poaching.
The men - aged between 31 and 44 - were arrested in the early hours of Friday morning along the R532 road between Graskop and Bushbuckridge.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Leonard Hlathi, says security guards were patrolling around the timber plantation in that area when they spotted a white bakkie loaded with what looked like dead animals.
He adds the security guards immediately called the police and the suspects were chased until they were apprehended.
"The vehicle was found with 17 dead animals and they were arrested," says Hlathi.
He adds the suspects were found in possession of a 0.22 rifle, 144 live ammunition, a spotlight, one magazine.
The carcasses of an African Civet cat, four bushbucks, one common mountain bushbuck and 11 grey duikers were discovered on the back of the vehicle.
