[WATCH]: 17 motorists arrested on N1 as metro police clamps down

The Johannesburg metro police arrested 17 people on the N1 near Soweto on Friday for failing to comply with lockdown regulations.

The metro police had initially set up one roadblock but were forced to set up a second one.
"We have extended the lockdown to the N1 south based on the traffic flow we are picking up. People are not taking the call by the president to stay home seriously and misleading law enforcement,” said Joburg mayoral spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase.
“Someone came here and told us his grandmother died and upon further investigation told the truth that he is going to see his girlfriend."

He said the arrested will be charged in line with the lockdown regulations.
Some motorists who were without permits told officers they were going to petrol garages, dropping money off at their grandmothers while others claimed they were going to the shops.
