Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Damage worth millions have been reported after disgruntled residents set the Allendale substation alight on the East Rand last night.
It is believed that residents who embarked on violent protests in the Tembisa area, are responsible for the destruction of the power station.
Several areas on the East Rand including all extensions of Rabie Ridge and Phomolong have been dumped in darkness.

"A protest led to a part of the Allendale substation been set alight. It interrupted the electricity supply in that area because it forced Eskom to shut down the whole substation," says City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.
According to Mangena, the area was unsafe for technicians to approach the substation and try restore power on Tuesday evening.
"We will try again this morning."
