Police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating cases of public violence, arson and malicious damage to property after angry community members torched a tavern in Tongaat, north of Durban on Friday night.
This comes after the remains of what is believed to be missing 16-year-old Andile 'Bobo' Mbuthu were found in the river.
A video of a badly beaten Mbuthu, who was accused of stealing alcohol at the tavern, surfaced on social media earlier this week.
KZN police spokesperson Jay Naicker says some 500 community members gathered outside the tavern before setting it alight.
"We appealing to members of the community to resist from taking the law into their own hands.
"We are also appealing to community leaders to educate the community we because we are seeing acts of violence in the area and in this case a 16 year has lost his life.”
Six suspects were in police custody for questioning on Friday.
