According to City Power's Isaac Mangena, two employees entered the chamber on Monday after being instructed by the company owner to paint it without City Power's authorisation.

The chamber is situated inside the factory.

It's believed the deceased was electrocuted after being caught between the high voltage equipment.

The other employee was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The department is yet to establish whether or not to pose any sanctions against the company.

"The police were here yesterday taking statements from the owners. Today we are here with the Department of Labour who are trying to check what happened but also to see if there are any liabilities that the owners should carry, because they were not allowed to be in that chamber in the first place," says Mangena.

Vaal Dam levels continue to drop

In October, the dam levels stood at 50% but has now dropped to 44,66%. The department's Sputnik Ratau says water consumption by Gauteng residents is at an all-time high and this is contributing to the decreasing dam levels.

Mangena adds that the loss of life could have been avoided.

"There was no need to be in the City Power chamber, there was no need because we don't even paint City Power chambers. That's how they are supposed to be, we don't need to paint them,” says Mangena.

"We are cooperating with the Department of Labour and we'll give them our side and also we are cooperating with the police as well with their investigations into the matter.”
