WATCH: Learner in viral video ‘has medical condition’

The Gauteng Department of Education has moved the clarify the circumstances around a grade 7 learner’s aggressive behaviour towards a teacher.

The video has gone viral, prompting Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi to visit Lewisham Primary School in Krugersdorp on Thursday in to get a full report on the incident.
He says the incident happened five months ago.
“I had an opportunity to also meet with the parent and the child to hear their side of the story, including officials of the Department of Social Development. We have established that the learner has a medical condition and takes his medication during school hours, but on the day nobody administered the medication which affected the learner.”

The video emerged amid concern over what is seen as the rising tide of violence at schools around the country.
Lesufi says the department has begun a process to ensure that both the learner and the educator are protected.
“We have established an independent inter-departmental team consisting of the department of health, social development, and education to advise him on how to respond to the matter. But at this moment the matter is under control.”
He adds that they are also investigating who is responsible for recording the incident.
