[WATCH] Monument High assault: School ‘did not follow due process’

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says Monument High School in Krugersdorp breached serious protocol by not reporting an assault.

A video was posted on Twitter of a pupil assaulting another for allegedly smoking at school.

In the video, one pupil is seen dragging and pushing another shouting: "Jy will mos rook".

Lesufi had a meeting with the school and family representative on Friday to investigate the matter.

He says a similar incident happened a few weeks ago and due processes were also not followed.

"It is quite clear from the meeting that the incident that was recorded on the video is an incident that was a follow from a previous incident that happened on the 8th of August and on that basis we asked the school to gather the entire evidence.

"The resolution that we have arrived at is that there is no learner that has been suspended. All learners are in class and all learners have been asked to write - in the next 48 hours - why they must not be suspended all those that were involved.

"It's quite clear there are many versions and many areas where things didn't happen the way we wanted it to happen. For example, the school didn't report the matter formally to the district and the department and that's a serious breach of our protocols."
