The facility was opened on Thursday.

Speaking at the launch, National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole said the hospital is part of a long-term plan.

He said they had originally hoped to open a police hospital in 2021, but the plans had to be brought forward due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"And if we have to speak to our infection rate at the present moment we are at 15 707.

"Thought we have 11 00 recoveries, I think a facility of this particular nature is going to assist us to increase our recovery rates, hence the launch of this particular hospital.”

The hospital is expected to be used to isolate and quarantine police officials and family members who are exposed to Covid-19.

At this point, the facility is only able to house 53 patients.
