A jocular President Cyril Ramaphosa has explained how he told the arts and culture minister to cancel the controversial R22 million monumental flag project.
Ramaphosa addressed the subject during a Black Business Council dinner on Thursday night.
The monumental flag project, which was proposed by Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, is under review after it was met with backlash from South Africans.

“Mthethwa comes to me, he says ‘President please tell me when I can call you?’ a smiling Ramaphosa told those in attendance.
“So I say ‘Mthethwa I am in a cabinet committee meeting, we’ll talk afterwards’. So, I call him back and he says ‘President, this flag thing which is such a wonderful initiative, but it seems that our people are not happy with it’. Of course, they are not happy with it! He asked what I should do, and I said `cancel this thing’.”
