Stellenbosch University says the student who urinated on the study material of another student has been suspended from his residence.
In a video, which was widely shared on social media over the weekend, a white student can be seen urinating on the books and a laptop of a black student while he was sleeping.
The university's student affairs director Dr Choice Makhetha says an investigation by their Equality Unit will determine whether the incident was racially motivated.
"The investigation will tell us in detail, we also have to look at all angles around this issue what motivated this because it is totally not acceptable and once, we have all the facts on the table and certain that what was said was discriminatory, we have to deal with that. We do not condone racism, sexism and when it happens, we must act decisively through the process of the university."
Makhetha says the university will provide a laptop to help the affected student prepare for his upcoming exams.
"It is important for us to ensure that the student is able to study and prepare for exams, I promised him that we will make sure he has a laptop and all the supporting materials he needs to succeed."
Meanwhile, the South African Student Congress (SASCO) has issued a statement calling for a swift response by the university.
"We call for fast and swift justice for the indignity suffered by fellow student who is still traumatised by the whole ordeal, not only did the racist break in his room and racially attacked him but the racist also damaged his (laptop), thus disadvantaging his studies.
"When asked by the victim, the racist response what that it is what they do to black boys. Anything short of expulsion and potentially criminal charges would be regarded as injustice. This racist criminal act deserves the highest punishment."
