University management beefed up security and restricted access to the Tuks campus.

This comes after students belonging to the EFF Student Command threatened to shut down the institution in a call to remove Afrikaans as a medium of instruction at UP. They were also calling for the language policy to be overhauled.

Students have ignored a court interdict against them protesting on campus after an anti-Afrikaans protest turned violent late on Thursday.

Protesting students entered Hatfield Studios, one of the residences near campus.
