Water levels at several Joburg reservoirs remain 'critically low'
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The water supply problems in parts of Johannesburg showed no signs of abating on Thursday as levels at several Rand Water reservoirs remained critically low.
On Sunday, the embattled water utility warned residents of low water levels at several reservoirs in the city.
It blamed the shortage on high demand caused by the rise in temperatures.
The utility suffered a further setback during Tuesday evening’s storm and accompanying strong winds, which damaged the power lines feeding the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant.
The affected systems include South Hills Tower, Brixton Reservoir, Naturena Reservoir, Sandton Reservoirs, Midrand and Erand Towers.
In a statement released on Thursday, the utility urged residents to continue to use water sparingly.
"Alternative water supply will be arranged for the affected customers and will be placed at strategic locations. Residents are requested to observe level-1 water restrictions, which are implemented from 1 September to 31 March.
“These restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, clean driveways, as well as fill up swimming pools and water features between 6:00 and 18:00. Instead, the use of greywater is encouraged. This is to ensure that systems are kept stable throughout the coming months.”
