We are making a mockery of ourselves, Buthelezi tells Jeppestown
Updated | By Nokukhanya Mntambo
There was a mixed reception for former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi from the community in Jeppestown when he attempted to mediate over the recent spate of attacks against migrants.
On Sunday Buthelezi addressed the crowd, calling for calm in the country.
The leader condemned the widespread violence that gutted several businesses across Gauteng and other provinces.
"I'm not here as a politician, I'm here as an elder who can see that the nation is burning, who sees that nation plunging into a ditch," he said.
"There has been a loss of life, damage to property and violence. When all of this was happening, the world was watching."
There have been several attempts by government officials and leaders to intervene.
The attacks on migrants has also been condemned by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who made an emergency state of the nation address on Thursday.
Buthelezi had to be recalled from the podium a number of times when the community broke out in song.
"As Africans, we are making a mockery of ourselves."
In his address, the prince also condemned the killing of women and children.
