NSFAS' newly appointed administrator, Randall Carolissen, adds a further one billion will be released to students in the coming days.

"At least the sBux students now have cash allows and can settle their debts and they can concentrate on their studies and exams. We are very pleased with the progress ," says Carolissen.

Carolissen adds that the number of outstanding bursary agreements has also been reduced.

"We reduced the number of outstanding bursary agreements from 68 000, reduced that to 23 000."

Carolissen says the organisation started accepting new applications on Monday.

This comes after the Minister of Higher Education, Naledi Pandor halted the 2019 applications due to backlogs from the previous two years.

"Yesterday we had more than 45 000 students trolling our website. We have concluded over 5000 successful applications."
