We are yet to receive formal letter from ANC, Says MK Party on coalition talks

The Umkhonto Wesizwe Political Party (MK Party) says it has yet to receive any formal invitation from the ANC to discuss coalition formations.

This response comes amid claims by the governing party that it has received no response from former President Jacob Zuma's party.

The ANC stated that it had reached out to all political parties represented in the National Assembly in its efforts to form a coalition government.

These include meetings with delegations from the IFP, the EFF, the DA, the NFP, and the PA.

ANC Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, said the ANC had received no response from the Jacob Zuma-led MK.

"The national officials reported to the NWC that the ANC has repeatedly reached out to the MK party for an engagement meeting, with no positive response.

“Our door remains open as we continue to reach out to every party that is keen to contribute positively to moving our country forward," she said.

However, MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela told Jacaranda FM news that they have yet to receive an invitation from the ANC.

"We are not blue-ticking them; that is not a correct statement to make on their end.

The leaders of the ANC came individually to our desk at the National Results Operation Centre (ROC).

Chairperson Gwede Mantashe came separately, Deputy Secretary General Nomvula Mokonyane came separately, and Mondli Gungubele (NEC member) came separately.

And all that it was, was them making overtures.

There was nothing concrete, nothing formal that was tabled.

It was just them saying be open-minded to engage with us, and we said we are open-minded to engage.

Have we received a letter from Mbalula [Secretary General Fikile Mbalula]? No, we haven't received a letter from Mbalula, nothing formal in a formal communique requesting to engage," said Ndhlela.

Briefing the media on Thursday, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula still insists that the ANC is struggling to reach the MK Party.

"It is very difficult to talk to people there because when you talk to them, they tell you that they are still waiting for Ubaba [Zuma] and it is difficult to reach Ubaba," said Mbalula.

Mbalula jokingly asked the media to help reach the MK Party.

"The country must move ahead. The results have been pronounced, and in the next two weeks, we must elect the speaker and the president. We are open to talk to the MK Party; that is not an issue for us," said Mbalula.
