'We want the bones of former ANC leaders to show us the way' - Ramaphosa

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa says the tradition of visiting the graves of former leaders ahead of the January 8th statement is a way of seeking guidance from the forbearers of the party.

This weekend the party will celebrate its 111th birthday in Mangaung since it was formed in 1912.

Ramaphosa and newly elected secretary general, Fikile Mbalula visited the gravesite of former ANC President Zacharias Richard Mahabane in Kroonstad on Wednesday.

"Going to their gravesite in itself can be seen as being ordinary, but for us, it is a truly historical moment politically that we are able to recall those who came before us, who made enormous sacrifices to build this glorious organisation that has led the struggle for freedom and continues to lead the struggle bettering our people's lives,” said Ramaphosa.

"It is a wonderful moment for us to reflect - we want their bones to talk to us because biblically it is said that the tendons can be re-joined, and the bones can come alive and, in a way, we want those bones to talk to us and show us the way in terms of what to do."

The party will on Thursday resume its national conference in a hybrid model ahead of the January 8 birthday celebration.
