In the first incident on Saturday night, six trucks were torched on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by five trucks set alight in Mpumalanga. This was followed by another three trucks in Limpopo, while two more trucks went up in flames on the N2 near Empangeni and another four in Mpumalanga on Wednesday morning.

This brings the total number of trucks torched in less than a week to 20.

Ramaphosa spoke at the National Rural Youth Service Corps (NARYSEC) pass-out parade in Nigel on Wednesday

“Those who do not love the people of South Africa are now going around the country causing disorder on our roads. Those who are involved in activities like those, the strong arm of the law is now about to pounce on them because we will not allow South Africa to be lawless, to have people who are running around on a rampage destroying the economic assets of our country,” the president said.

“We will not allow those who intent on sabotaging the economy of our country to have their way, we will go after them, and they will face the full might of the law.”

Ramaphosa said law enforcement agencies are working to track down the perpetrators.

“I have directed the police, supported by other security agencies such as intelligence, to spare nothing but to do all that they have to do to find these people because South Africa cannot have people like that, who just do as they wish, kill people, burn trucks and stop traffic on our highways.”

Several associations and organisations, including the Road Freight Association, have voiced their frustration at the economic damage caused by the attacks.
