Weather Service to meet following KZN ‘tornado’

The South African Weather Service will meet behind closed doors to map the way forward after what is believed to be a tornado hit the Midlands in KwaZulu-Natal.

A meeting between weather services officials are taking place on Tuesday evening after what is believed to be a tornado hit the Midlands area.


“North-west of Richmond and moving towards Pietermaritzburg this afternoon (Tuesday),” says forecaster Dipuo Tawana.


She couldn’t confirm whether it was in fact a tornado.

“It was quite an intense storm and there is a possibility that we might have had a tornado.”


She says winds of at least 32 kilometres per hour were reported.


“There is a possibility severe thunderstorm over the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal for tomorrow (Wednesday).”

In a video posted to Facebook by Storm Report Live, the tornado can be seen fiercely tearing through what is said to be New Hanover near Pietermaritzburg.
