What you need to know if Zuma resigns
Updated | By Neo Motloung & Sinethemba Madolo
Civil society, Future South Africa, and various opposition parties have called on President Jacob Zuma to step down ahead of the State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Thursday.
If Zuma was to resign ahead of Sona he would have to write a letter of resignation to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, says the director of the Centre for Constitutional Rights, Phephelaphi Dube.
"This is for the simple reason that it is the National Assembly that has elected him into that position," says Dube.
Dube says once Zuma vacates the office the deputy president would have to be sworn into the office of president.
Then the deputy president will complete the last 18 months of the president's term.
