WHO Covid-19 declaration does not mean pandemic is over - DoH
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Department of Health (DoH) says while the World Health Organisation (WHO) may have declared that Covid-19 no longer constitutes a public health emergency, it does not mean that it is over.
Health Department spokesperson, Foster Mohale says that the pandemic remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in high-risk populations like the elderly and those living with comorbidities.
“The number of cases is far lower at the current moment than during the height of the pandemic, hence it is no longer viewed as a public health emergency,” he says.

“The department, in line with WHO recommendations, continues to recommend vaccination, especially for high routine health services and will continue to offer services aimed at preventing and treating COVID, including vaccination services.”
Since the onset of Covid-19 in 2020, over 4 million people have been infected by the deadly virus.
The number of deaths has also exceeded 100 000 at the end of April 2023.
