Winde slams 'political blame game' in aftermath of George building collapse

Western Cape Premier Allan Winde has urged an end to the “political blame game” and to instead focus on efforts to save as many lives as possible in the George building collapse.

The death toll from the building collapse rose to six on Tuesday, with 27 people rescued.

A total of 47 people are believed to be still trapped under the rubble.

The five-storey structure had been under construction when it caved in on Monday afternoon.

Seventy-five construction workers were on-site at the time.

Winde also called on members of the public not to spread misinformation about the death toll.

He said search and rescue teams should be allowed to do their work.

“This is not a time to play politics. We have 47 people trapped underneath the collapsed building, and quite frankly, we need to allow these professionals to save these lives. That is our main focus."

"I have noticed some of the fake news out there. One of the political tweets said 22 people are dead. This is unacceptable. We have families waiting in the city hall on news about their loved ones,” he added.
