Mthweni and Ntombela will serve as premiers-elect until a vote by the respective provincial legislatures.

The positions became vacant after former Free State Premier Ace Magashule and former Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza were elected as ANC secretary-general and ANC deputy president respectively.

The governing party holds majority in both provinces meaning the election of the two candidates is a mere formality.

Mtshweni says she will do her very best to serve the people of Mpumalanga.

"I'll do the best that I can to make sure that we steer the ship towards the right direction. Taking in consideration that we need to take into cognisant the plight of our people and the challenges they are facing."

Ntombela, who is also the deputy president of the ANC Women's League, vowed that Free State will implement the resolutions taken at the governing party's national conference last year.

"I know it is not going to be easy, just because I am a woman, and I know that it is going to be a little bit tough but I promise that I will do my best."
