The Youth League was reacting to the decision by Minister of Women Youth and Persons with Disabilities Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to retire from parliament later this year.

Dlamini-Zuma announced her retirement in a letter following an invitation to attend the interview for the 2024 national list.

Dlamini-Zuma has been a member of the cabinet since 1994.

The ANCYL's spokesperson Zama Khanyase says younger people need to be inducted into parliament to take over after members retire.

"Others who have the same feeling as her are welcome to do the same as well. As the ANC Youth League we have been advocating for a generational mix. Our reasoning has been that if you are going to have a mojority of parliamentarians who are aged, it means that there will come a time where they will have to exit and they will exit at the same time, which means that we would be left with so much space that would need younger people to fill in but they had not been inducted into the job."

Khanyase believes South Africa and Africa must move with the times and give opportunities to young people.

"We have also had that belief that it is elders who must lead, even in our local communities it is believed that elders must be in council because they are the ones who possess the knowledge but we are moving with times.

"We are in modern times now where skills are much more important to bring the change."
