The African National Congress' (ANC) KwaZulu-Natal Task Team Coordinator, Sihle Zikalala, has denied that the province is plotting behind President Cyril Ramaphosa's back.

Zikalala was speaking at the KwaDukuza Regional Conference north of Durban on Saturday.

KwaZulu-Natal backed Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in the race to become ANC president ahead of its national conference in Nasrec last year.

Zikalala is also a known supporter of former president Jacob Zuma.

But he told delegates at the conference that unity is paramount.

"We emerged from the national conference united behind the elected leadership of the ANC. We are happy that the conference did not elect a faction, it elected the leadership under one president, Cyril Ramaphosa. We are united in support of the leadership elected. I’m saying this because there are those who continue to say KZN is mobilising against the national leadership. I hear some of the national leadership saying so. We are not going to respond to them but we will seek engagement with them inside the structures of the ANC."

Zikalala also warned that the party needs to work hard to secure the Indian vote ahead of next year's elections.

"This conference must be concerned about the Indian community in KwaDukuza who are losing hope in the ANC. They are losing confidence in the ANC and are no longer voting ANC. This conference must be concerned about that, it must respond to that."
