Zondo laments impact of load shedding on courts
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has called on the government to resolve load shedding due to the impact of the planned power cuts on the functionality of the courts.
Zondo delivered the opening session of the 2023 Judges' Conference at Sun City in North West, on Tuesday.
He said generators should be made available to ensure the courts continue to operate.
Last week, the High Court in Pretoria declared the planned power cuts to be unconstitutional and a violation of basic human rights following an application for load shedding exemption for essential services and schools.
The court gave the government a deadline of 31 January to implement the ruling.
"The problem of load shedding has been there for a very long time, seems to take long to resolve and it is very disruptive to the operations of the courts. We depend on the executive to do what needs to be done to ensure that load shedding is resolved. Courts are able to proceed without disruptions or even if there are generators during load shedding."
