Zondo report ‘decisive break’ from state capture era - Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa believes the final report of the Zondo commission will allow a decisive break from the area of state capture.
The commission of inquiry into state capture’s chairperson, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, handed the final report to the president at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Wednesday.
The nearly 2000-page report deals in part with the SABC, the Vrede diary farm scandal and the State Security Agency.
Ramaphosa described the era of state capture as an assault on South Africa’s democracy which violated the rights of all its citizens.
“Through the various reports released by the commission, we have come to understand what happened, who was involved, and what effect state capture has had on our state, our economy and our society,” Ramaphosa said.
The president also lauded the work done by former public protector Thuli Madonsela, saying the report is the fulfilment of the remedial action set out in her State of Capture report.
“The report is far more than a record of widespread corruption, fraud and abuse; it is also an instrument through which the country can work to ensure that such events are never allowed to happen again,” Ramaphosa added.
Ramaphosa has four months to formally present the full report to Parliament, together with a plan on how the recommendations will be implemented.
