The plant was impacted by a power supply interruption from Eskom's Snowden high voltage sub-station.

The substation's transmission lines were affected by a veld fire on Sunday afternoon leading to water interruptions.

Rand Water Executive manager Edward Takalani Singo says the power has since been restored.

“The challenge that we experienced yesterday was as a result of veld fire confirmed by Eskom. Eskom confirmed that they had a veld fire that had an effect on their transmission line so when the situation is like that, Eskom will switch off until the fire is under control.

“Now the power has been brought back, we are at  Zuikerbosch water treatment plant running at full capacity, supplying water to all our stations and reservoirs.

“We had indicated that the  City of Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg water, City of Tshwane, Mogale City, Rustenburg and west Rand will be impacted

As we speak, we think the situation is under control, we are not anticipating major issues.”

Singo says the capacity of reservoirs will be determined by water usage.

“What we want to still make an appeal is that while we are back to full capacity, customers should continue to use water sparingly.  When we run at full capacity now, we must make sure that we fill up the reservoirs, and that takes long – as we fill up the reservoirs consumers are consuming from that reservoir so the land of our stability is dependent on consumers using water sparingly.

“As we speak now, we are in a situation where we can say consumers have responded well, but we still need to use water sparingly so that we can be able to recover on our reservoirs.”
