Zuma granted leave to appeal
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
President Jacob Zuma has been granted leave to appeal an earlier high court ruling ordering him to hand over documents and reasons for his latest cabinet reshuffle.
The matter was heard before Judge Bashier Vally in the High Court in Johannesburg.
Judge Vally said, just on merits, he's not confident the matter will succeed, but there might be other compelling reasons in defence of the appeal that come forward if they approach the Supreme Court of Appeal.
The DA filed an urgent application requesting the reasons behind President Zuma's midnight cabinet reshuffle, which saw the axing of then Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas.
The High Court in Pretoria ordered that President Zuma must supply the opposition party with these documents, but the president's legal team applied for leave to appeal, citing judicial overreach.
The DA's request comes before the main court matter later this month - when the DA will argue that the decision to fire Gordhan was irrational and should be overturned.
