President Jacob Zuma was greeted by loud cheers at a stadium in Reiger Park, Johannesburg, where he was due to launch the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children on Tuesday.
People stood on their chairs and waved 16 days of activism flags as he entered the large tent erected on the field.
Zuma smiled and waved at the excited crowd.
The gathering then stood to sing the national anthem.
