Zuma to survive ANC motion of no confidence: analyst

Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni believes President Jacob Zuma will survive a motion of no confidence at the ANC national executive committee meeting.

"It is unlikely that you will have a recall at this moment in such a dramatic way," says Fikeni.

The meeting was extended until today after several ministers reportedly pleaded with President Zuma to step down.

Fikeni says President Zuma will survive the motion to recall him, but it will leave him in a weaker position, politically.

"I do think that emerging from this a clearer problem of action [will emerge] which is most likely to constrain his power," says Fikeni.

The ANC has extended its last NEC meeting of the year, amid reports of a vote on President Zuma's position as leader of the ruling party.

Seeing as the motion was reportedly brought by ministers, it means that President Zuma could possibly reshuffle his cabinet to remove opponents, if he survives.

Political analyst Karima Brown says this will be a mistake.

"The knock-on effect could be that he could open a completely new front against him inside the organisation - the NEC does not go away - and those ministers become back benchers in Parliament and they can very-well collude with the opposition and get rid of him," says Brown.
