"We send good wishes to our liberation struggle stalwart and one of our three surviving Rivonia Trialists. We urge the nation to keep him and his family in their thoughts and prayers at this time," President Zuma says.

The 87-year-old struggle icon was initially admitted to hospital for dehydration, but doctors then discovered a blood clot on his brain.

According to the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation the blood clot was successfully removed.

"It will be some time before Kathrada fully recovers. Due to hospital regulations and the period required for recovery, only visits from the immediate family will be permitted," Director of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Neeshan Balton says.

Kathrada is one of three Rivonia Trialists still alive, with the other two being Andrew Mlangeni and Denis Goldberg.

Along with Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba and Elias Motsoaledi, they were sentenced in 1964 to life imprisonment on Robben Island during the infamous Rivonia Trial.
