Zweli Mkhize addresses vote-buying, says ANC ‘not for sale’

ANC presidential nominee Zweli Mkhize has addressed the issue of ‘vote-buying’ in the party ahead of its national conference in December.

Mkhize spoke at the memorial lecture of late struggle stalwart Bertha Gxowa in Katlehong on Wednesday.

The former health minister, who is up against the incumbent Cyril Ramaphosa for the party’s top job, refused to say who he was referring to, told reporters that ANC members refused to be bought.

He added that the party is not for sale.

“Now how do you have a leader who got into office because of the powerful thousands and millions of dollars? We are making the ANC cheap. It doesn’t matter how much money you have; we refuse to be bought.

“I will not give an example, but I will only say that these are the thoughts that have come from our branches and our delegates where we have seen this kind of tendency where we are basically saying that we condemn such a tendency.

"It is not part of the ANC culture and therefore we are saying that the ANC is not for sale and the people who want to use money underestimate the desire for our members and our people to have the ANC renewed and united.”

The race to lead the country’s biggest party is entering the final stretch. Earlier in the week the ANC’s electoral committee released the names of the nominees for the top six positions.

Mkhize will go head-to-head with Ramaphosa, who has been nominated by over 2000 branches.

The position of ANC deputy presidency position is hotly contested with three candidates looking to replace David Mabuza.

The nominees are current ANC treasurer Paul Mashatile, NEC member Ronald Lamola and chairperson of the ANC in the Eastern Cape Oscar Mabuyane.
