Zweli Mkhize wants government to take over payment of grants
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
ANC Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize says the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the government must take over the distribution of social grants.
Mkhize says he feels that the state must generate its own capacity to be able to provide the service.
"The state needs to approach Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) and take over the technology, whatever the compensation associated with it, so that it becomes something the state can deal with," said Mkhize.
Mkhize told the media at an address at the Gordon Institute for Business Science that the debate around the costs of administering the payment of social grants is justifiable.

"It's important to make sure that the government looks at what is the core of this system and then what can be let out for competitive bidding out of that process. I think SASSA needs to be assisted to develop the necessary technology. If it means buying it, employing the necessary personnel so that government under SASSA takes responsibility for that," said Mkhize.
Mkhize said the ANC wants the SASSA crisis to be resolved.
"We really hope that all the pensions and grants will be paid on the due date and that everything would have been done to make sure that such a thing happens," said Mkhize.
