India seize control of Windies Test
Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin put on 198 runs for the seventh wicket, to give India a 120-run lead over the West Indies at stumps on the second day of the first Test here on Thursday.
According to SuperSport, the hosts completely outplayed the Windies, as they added 234 for the loss of one wicket in the second and third sessions, to leave the hosts on 354 for six at Eden Gardens.
Sharma scored a maiden Test century to finish the day unbeaten on 127, while Ashwin still had his wicket intact with 92 to his name.
Sharma has had to wait 108 one-day internationals to don the white clothing for India, and made it count as he hit 16 fours and six in his innings.
Ashwin is just eight runs shy of what will be his second test century. The 27-year-old off-spinner never looked out of his depth as he struck 10 boundaries during his knock.
Earlier, Rohit Sharma had struck a half-century, as India recovered to trail the West Indies by five runs.
After Shane Shillingford took four wickets for to leave the home side in trouble on 120 for five prior to lunch, the hosts recovered to go into the tea interval on 229 for six at Eden Gardens.
Sharma carried his superb one-day international form into his debut test, and he marked the occasion with a steady 61, which included eight fours.
He partnered Ravichandran Ashwin (38) for the seventh wicket and together they added 73 runs after skipper MS Dhoni fell in the 51st over.
