R.I.P Gugu Zulu - The 'Fastest Brother in Africa'

He has been called Mzansi's most celebrated black racing driver.

The Soweto-born action man and national rally champion was a fitness fanatic and has also dabbled in long distance running and cycling. He was also known as an incorrigible adrenaline junkie and lover of the outdoors.


Racing driver, rally driver, cyclist, television presenter, advanced driving instructor, master of ceremonies and celebrity dancer, were among the diverse fields listed on his CV.


Not only was he a whizz behind the wheel of a rally car or track car, but also completed a number of half marathons and cycle challenges.


Among his TV credits, he hosted the popular SABC motoring show 'Car Torque' as well as being a presenter on the DSTV motor sport show, 'Ignition'. 


Gugu also featured in the South African leg of the popular Top Gear Festival and was a stunt driver in the movie 'Lord of War', which starred Nicholas Cage.


Gugu was initiated into motor sport through a development programme with the Isondo Racing Academy. He was partnered with Volkswagen South Africa and Sasol and had been racing professionally for over 15 years.


He featured as one of the celebrity contestants on the fifth season of the SABC 2 reality dance competition 'Strictly Come Dancing' in 2008.


His love for rallying started in 1997 when he joined the MotorSport Academy and his career took a massive upswing when he was introduced to the legendary Sarel van der Merwe, who took him under his wing and encouraged him to compete in V8's and also introduced him to Volkswagen.


Van der Merwe was Gugu's mentor and provided him with guidance and advice throughout his career.


Zulu and his wife, Letshego Zulu, was part of the Trek4Mandela expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.


In a statement released,  the Nelson Mandela Foundation said Zulu died early on Monday morning while trying to reach the summit of the mountain. He experienced breathing problems.


Gugu was married to reality TV star Letshego Moshoeu (who appeared on e.tv's Fear Factor and M-Net's Survivor South Africa: Maldives), whom he began dating in 2001.


He is survived by his wife and baby girl who turned one in June. He was 38 years-old.
