Gsport is an online initiative launched in 2006 to raise the profile of South African women in sport.

The Springbok Women’s Sevens will go head-to-head with the Free State Crinums netball team and the Momentum Proteas cricket team for the award. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner at The Venue, Melrose Arch, in Johannesburg on Saturday, 27 August.

The 2015/16 season has been an impressive one for Springbok Sevens coach Renfred Dazel and his team as they won the Rugby Africa Sevens Olympic Qualifier in Johannesburg, the Roma Sevens and Hong Kong Women’s Sevens Invitational Cup.

The team defeated Kenya 40-0 in the Roma Sevens Final and France 14-7 in the Hong Kong Invitational, which marked their first victory the popular Hong Kong tournament. They also cruised to a 31-5 victory against Kenya in the Rugby Africa Olympic Qualifier.

The Springbok Women’s Sevens’ nomination follows SA Rugby’s award as the Sports Federation of the Year award last year for its commitment to growing women’s rugby in South Africa and changing the face of the game by contracting players for the first time in the history of South African rugby.

Accomplished female referee Marlize Jordaan, meanwhile, won the Woman of the Year award in 2013.

The finalists in each of the 14 categories were decided by a panel of four judges. The public, however, will determine the winners through online votes.
