People's march legal and going ahead

The march organised by civil rights organisations in Pretoria is legal and is going ahead.

There was some confusion about the legality of the march from Church Square to the Union Buildings, after police briefed media last night saying permission had not been granted.

 

But according to the mayor of Tshwane Solly Msimanga and Section 27's Mark Heywood, they obtained a court order giving the green light for the protest.

This after Section 27 approached the court at the last minute.

The march forms part of several protests be held across the country today after President Jacob Zuma's shock cabinet reshuffle last week.

List of marches taking place:

 

Gauteng:

 

The Pretoria march will take place from Church Square to the Union Buildings and starts at 12:00pm.

 

In Johannesburg protesters will march from Westgate Transport Hub to the Mary Fitzgerald Square. It starts at 10:00.

 

Other marches will take place in Edenvale and Saxonwold.

Western Cape:

 

Outa members will gather outside Parliament from midday with other marches that will take place at the Cape Town City Hall as well as in Kaizergracht street.

 

Pickets will also take place in Knysna, George, Mossel Bay March, Muizenberg and Sedgefield.

 

Northern Cape:

 

The March for Change will kick off at the Preserverance College at 9:30.

 

Free State:

 

Marchers will gather in Welkom at the Municipal with another march planned in Bloemfontein at the Hoffman Square.

 

North West:

 

Marchers will gather at the Klerksdorp Recreation Club at 10:00.

 

Mpumalanga:

 

In Mbombela protesters will get together on the corner of the R40 highway and Samora Machel Road at 11:00.

 

Kwa-Zulu Natal:

 

There will be three main marches in KZN.

 

With OUTA members that will gather along Sandile Thusi Road to march to the amphitheatre on the Beach front.

 

In Scottburgh protesters will march gather at the riverside entrance to Scottburgh while citizens of Midlands will gather at Howick Falls.

 

Eastern Cape:

 

Citizens will meet at the Robert Sobukwe building in Church street.

 

There are also several international solidarity marches planned in Berlin and London.
