Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi about an incident that occurred while he was on board a plane.

A person with diabetes fell ill on the plane where Motsoaledi found himself, but luckily for the passenger, the Home Affairs Minister was there to save the day.

According to Minister Motsoaledi, he is a trained doctor, so when the passenger fell into a diabetic coma due to low blood sugar, he had the skills to help.

Motsoaledi realised the man had low blood sugar and proceeded to rub sugar on the man's gums, which led to him waking up from the coma.

He also told Martin Bester that the passenger was "okay" by the time they left the plane. He did, however, advise the passenger's wife to take him to the hospital for further observation.

Coincidently, this is the second time the minister has found himself in this situation.

In 2002, the minister was on a flight when he heard someone calling for a doctor. Even though he was not practising at the time, he raised his hand to offer his services.

During the incident, he encountered a woman in a coma on the plane. After searching the lady's bag, he quickly realised that she had diabetes.

Luckily for the woman, the minister knew exactly what to do in the situation and ultimately saved her life.
