Thirteen-year-old Keira Rutherford from Hoedspruit was a bubbly and active schoolgirl. Then she fell desperately ill. She had been sick and in agony - unable to walk or use her arms. She was not able to attend school or do any schoolwork.

After three incorrect diagnoses, she was finally diagnosed with Lyme Disease,. As Lyme Disease is so uncommon in SA, by the time the diagnosis was made, Keira’s illness had already progressed to Stage 3. The only option for treatment was in Germany at a cost of R800,000. The community of Hoedspruit jumped into action and have already raised R680,000 in a week and with the help of GMA, the rest of the money was raised to get Keira to Germany to start her treatment - and Keira took her first steps again.
