Thabo Bester, also known as the ‘Facebook rapist’, escaped the Mangaung prison in May last year by faking his own death.

The news of his escape spread like wildfire and had the whole world talking. This also sparked an investigation into Bester’s escape and a search for the man who faked his own death.

According to Jacaranda FM News, he (Bester), his accomplice Dr Nandipha Magudumana, and a Mozambican national, were arrested in the city of Arusha in Tanzania, near the Kenyan border on Friday night.

It was confirmed on Thursday that an aircraft carrying Bester and Magudumana arrived in South Africa.

"Dr #NandiphaMagudumana walks out of one car into another under heavy police guard. The aircraft carrying her and #ThaboBester landed at Lanseria Airport at 4am," wrote journalist Chriselda Zozi Lewis on Twitter.

When Martin Bester spoke to Forensic Psychologist Gerard Labuschagne, he said: "He could very possibly be outside of the country. He probably went to one of our neighbouring countries to continue conning people."

In 2011, Thabo Bester was tried and convicted for the rape of two women he had targeted through Facebook. He became known as the 'Facebook Rapist'.

While in prison, it was believed that he had died in May 2022 when his cell went up in flames, leaving only a burnt body as evidence that Bester had been there.

As it turns out, the body that was found in the wreckage of the fire did not belong to Thabo Bester.
