Eskom is considering disconnecting the City of Tshwane as one of the necessary steps to secure outstanding payment.

The City of Tshwane is in breach of the Electricity Supply Agreement that it holds with Eskom by failing to pay the R1.6 billion which was due and payable on 17 August 2022.

The City's payments to date have done little to dent the massive outstanding balance on its electricity account. The power utility says it has had numerous engagements with the City of Tshwane’s management to ensure that the City pays its account but to no avail.

Eskom says the inconsistent payments are both untenable and unacceptable.

Energy expert, Ted Blom, said that Eskom normally gives 14 days' notice before cutting power.

"However, the current legal situation is that Eskom cannot cut a municipality (reseller) if the end customer has paid,"he notes.

"So to stop the Eskom cuts, Munic needs to get an interdict. The current status /views of the court are that organs of state need to resolve the issue as per current legislation under Salga."

JacarandaFM Newscast Editor and news anchor, Christelle du Toit asked Blom what the process to disconnect the capital city would entail, and where it would leave customers.
