Afrikaans is a beautifully unique language.

It might sometimes sound similar to Dutch or German, but it still has its own special flavour.

Many South Africans tend to think that it is a language that is still not widely popular overseas and that most people won't understand the language, giving Afrikaans-speaking people some free reign to say whatever they please.

It basically gives you a chance to gossip without the risk of people understanding what you're saying.

Seeing as South Africans are no longer only confined to one continent, it seems like Afrikaans is becoming more popular overseas and this can lead to some awkward moments.

This weekend, a New Zealand reporter, Chereé Kinnear, posted a video on TikTok of her reporting on the Rugby World Cup final.

In the video, she is talking to the camera when a group of jolly South Africans enter the shot and joke around. She brushes them off and tries her best to continue on while ignoring them.

As they walk away, you can hear them say to her in Afrikaans, "Moenie vir ons wegjaag nie", obviously not expecting her to understand what they said.

@cheree_k Bet they didn’t expect that! *alot more the mic didnt pick up here and for the record im South African born, raised in NZ but grew up speaking Afrikaans at home #fyp #foryoupage #rugbyworldcup #springboks #southafrica #allblacks #newzealand #newsreporter #sportsreporter #blooper #newsanchor ♬ Funny - Gold-Tiger

It is certainly not encouraged to distract someone who is only trying to do their job, but others were quick to comment on the video saying the supporters' comments were luckily not exceptionally rude.

Another mentioned: "Charlize Theron take note there is another one that can speak Afrikaans."
