Every good business person knows that marketing can make or break your product. If you want to attract the right customers, you need to speak to them in a language they understand.

Pete Lymer of Leek in England's Staffordshire county knows the power of advertising. He has used the signboard outside of JW Ash & Sons, the butchery where he works, to catch the attention of passersby and potential customers for quite some time.

Pete translates his love of a good piece of meat into fun jokes and puns that he uses to advertise the shop's specials. In the past, Pete has enjoyed suggesting to customers that they "have their rump tenderized", and it has all been in good fun.

Until, that is, a mysterious warning from local police put the brakes on Pete's project.

The Telegraph reports that local police told Pete that "despite the good intent of the signs, they could cause offence to some". He was asked to think more carefully about what he puts on the signs.

People who frequent the butchery and enjoy Pete's humour have shared some of their favourite signs:

There was no formal complaint laid against Pete or the butchery regarding the signs.

Pete told a local news site: "I think it's just blown out of proportion. I'm not trying to upset anybody, I'm not the kind of person who would write something genuinely horrible."
