News reporter's interview with an inflatable mascot falls flat

Local reporters have a difficult time making the smallest events into big news, but very few are as awkward and embarrassing as this story.

Dave Scott tried his best to make the Inflatable Run and Festival in San Diego into an engaging local news story, but it was not meant to be.

KUSI-San Diego's meteorologist and telethon host Dave found himself standing in front of a confused, unresponsive crowd of race day volunteers. The first problem may have been Dave's angle for the story. His first question was "inflation... is it a good thing or a bad thing?".

The presenters in-studio, as well as the people in the crowd, are not sure how to answer Dave's question. They either ask him to repeat the question or remain completely silent. Dave was hoping for a more enthusiastic response, probably along the lines of "yes, it's a very good thing!" so that he could transition to the next part of his story, which was the interview with an inflatable mascot.

Realising that the crowd was not going to give him what he needed, no matter how hard he tried, Dave stalled a little bit before introducing the mascot, Mr Wacky.

The mascot ended up being the liveliest part of the crossing but he arrived on the scene just a bit too late.

The segment was already beyond saving, and Dave would probably have loved nothing more than to be back at home, away from inflatables and all conversation about the pros and cons of inflation.

This is yet another example of how unpredictable live television can be. We can only hope that the next community event Dave covers will have a more responsive crowd.
