Background: Turning the tide

Jolene and the four "lads" in her life have had four really tough years. It started in 2010 when she in one month lost her father-in-law, gave birth to her 3rd son and then lost her mother-in-law. Jolene was thereafter diagnosed with uterine cancer and her husband lost his job - the beginning of on-off employment for him, that has still left him looking for a job. Jolene has started working again - as a temp and for a lot less that what they need to get through the month. She asked Good Morning Angels to help her do something special this Christmas for her three sons of 11, 5 and 4 - just a little something for Christmas this year. Our friends at Rennies and Avis are ready to do just that...

Hi Rian & Dianne

I am sending this request in for my own family, a bit odd I know, but here’s my story…

The past four years of our lives has been so difficult.  It all started in 2010 on the 18th of August when my father in law died in a tragic freak accident at work, I was pregnant at the time with our youngest son, and due to the shock I gave birth to our wonderful baby boy Duan, the day before my father in law’s funeral.  3 weeks down the line my mother in law passed away on the 17th of September…In February 2012 I was diagnosed with uterine cancer and had to get an emergency hysterectomy.  My husband got retrenched during this period and was unemployed for 6 months. He then started to work in Kathu and only came home once a month for pay weekend. December 2012 the company I’ve been employed with for 6 years liquidated without warning and I was unemployed for 4 months.  As I started as a temp for a company, and I do not earn a big salary, my husband’s contract ended in May 2013 and he was yet again unemployed, this time for 4 months.  He then started working again and in May 2014 his contract was ended suddenly due to the metal strike…. He is still unemployed….

We have 3 boys aged 11, 5 and 4.  Our 5 year old’s birthday is on the 15th of December and he will then be 6. As we are only surviving on my salary, it is impossible for us to even buy our children a Christmas present. Therefore my biggest wish that I can ask for is just for help with a Christmas present for our boys.  We have planned a holiday with the family at Port Shepstone for December, which we also had to cancel, and the boys were broken as they were so excited to go to the sea…. (my 4 year old thinks the ocean is a big swimming pool… we were last on holiday in 2011 and he wasn’t even a year old). Therefore I can’t break their Christmas spirit and not give them a present for Christmas.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my story.

Best Regards,

Jolene Wolfe
