Innovation comes in all different sizes and shapes...

We pride ourselves when it comes to acknowledging the innovative thinkers that we have in South Africa.

Of course there are moments where we question the leadership of our country, but the people are what always seem to make us proud.

One such person is Katlego Khoza, from Lethabong, Rustenburg in North West. He saw a way of helping motorists whilst also helping himself - and it's got to do with potholes as deep as knee-level.

He takes to the "streets armed with nothing but sand and a shovel to fill up knee-deep potholes that riddle the streets in the area and pose a risk to motorists who pass there daily." (MSN)

After seeing how bad the potholes were affecting motorists along the busy D1332 road, he decided to take to the road with his spade and a bucket of sand.

The silver lining for Katlego is that many grateful motorists show him their gratitude by giving him money.

He can see anything from between R60 and R200 a day with his pothole filling efforts.

It is quite nice to see that people can still be kind about someone taking the time to do this. Because if you own a car, you will know that pothole damage can be extremely costly.

MORE FROM JACARANDA

"Despite the monetary reward, he says that the job is quite risky especially because there are so many cars speeding by as he works the road.

“It is a risky job, I have to look over my shoulders while working. It is not safe at all, I cannot be flat-footed,” he said, while reportedly ducking a speeding truck." (MSN)

Innovative but dangerous indeed. We hope that Katlego can turn this into something he can gain full-time employment for. Perhaps it could be something the government looks into.

Here's hoping. Till then, well done to Katlego.
