ANC hopes to announce new leadership by Monday

Despite being delayed by a full day, the ANC has managed to adopt delegates’ credentials and will now move on to voting for new leadership.

Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte briefed the media at the ANC’s 54th national conference at Nasrec on Sunday.

She says while the credential process took some time, they needed to make sure that it was dealt with correctly.

More than 5000 delegates were set to vote in a new leadership, but due to a range of issues, only 4700 delegates will be allowed to vote.

The Provincial Executive members of KwaZulu-Natal and Free State – who are not branch members – have been excluded from the voting process.

This is due to three High Court judgements, which not only declared the PEC meetings in these two provinces unlawful, but also nullified a number of brand Branch General Meetings.

Other delegates have been disqualified for failing to pass the verification process.

“A process of ensuring that indeed there was a BGM that sat and that indeed had elected a delegation,” Duarte tells journalists.

Duarte says they now hope to move on to the voting process, for which they required the credentials.

Delegates are first expected to adopt the rules of the conference.

Thereafter, they are set to vote on proposals for amending the party’s constitution.

Only then, nominations for the Top 6 will be made followed by the voting process.

“We hope to start voting at some point later this afternoon, hopefully, and have those results as it now stands, possibly by tomorrow morning,” says Duarte.

The party hopes to get 200 delegates to cast their votes per round, adding it could still take a long time.

Duarte says they still hope to conclude the conference by Wednesday night.
