Warning: The new Netflix documentary 'American Conspiracy:  The Octopus Murders' is not for the faint of heart.

Social media has been flooded with comments and posts about the new Netflix documentary series, with many reacting with sheer shock and horror over the story.

'American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders' follows the investigation of Danny Casolaro, an investigative journalist who was found dead in a hotel bathtub at age 44.

According to Tudum, Netflix's official blog for movies and series, Casolaro's death was ruled a suicide, but his family, friends and colleagues believe that he was murdered.

Reports of the investigative journalist's death led to a conspiracy theory surrounding his death called 'The Octopus', hence the series' name.

'The Octopus' conspiracy suggests that Casolaro was murdered because he was too close to unveiling shocking government truths.

"What began as an inquiry into a David vs Goliath contract and intellectual-property theft dispute ensnared one journalist in a massive web of intrigue involving political machinations, international espionage, and maybe even murder."

The series follows Casalaro's investigation into a computer program called Promis, which he believed was linked to spyware, money laundering and even murder.

He believed he had uncovered a hidden organisation that corrupt government officials headed up.

"These eight men, they're no longer government officials, but their tentacles can reach into any part of government in almost any country." excerpts reported to be from the journalist's research read.

After heading to a motel in the summer of 1991, where he expected to interview an essential source for the story, he never returned.

"If you want to go down the deep rabbit hole of government conspiracies, watch this Netflix show called 'American Conspiracy, the Octopus Murders," one person tweeted.

"My mind is in a blender from watching The Octopus Murders late last night. Couldn't sleep. Been thinking about it non stop. I want to blog about it, but I don’t even know where to begin," a second added.

"Stop everything you’re doing and watch American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders on Netflix. Not being dramatic, this is insane," a third said.
