GMA Coronavirus Support: Reaching out to the heart of the Kalahari desert to bring lockdown relief

The Northern Cape has sixteen confirmed coronavirus cases to date but lockdown is weighing heavy on the province and its people.

BACKGROUND: Deben is a tiny town in the heart of the Kalahari desert in the Northern Cape, with a population of less than 8,000 residents. According to the latest figures from the Department of Health, the Northern Cape Province as a whole has recorded only 16 confirmed coronavirus cases. The effect of the national lockdown on the people of the poorest province in the country is however devastating. Doing business and creating jobs in a small town like Deben is a struggle in the best of times - and now, the sources of income and basics like food have dried up like the desert itself. The Dorningdraad Pub and Restaurant in Deben is a case in point, where gourmet roosterkoek is on the menu and a donkey cart ride your Uber. They’ve been breathing life into the town for the past ten years, currently employing eight people, mostly women, who are the breadwinners of their families. Now, their doors are shut. Due to this reason, Doringdraad was nominated for some #GMACoronaVirusSupport.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:

Ek sal dit regtig waardeer as jul hierdie nominasie sal oorweeg.
Vriendelike groete,
Chantelle
